New markets needed for volume of fruit coming online....

2. Introduction

• A group of growers of tropical fruit needed to change their Food Safety and Quality Assurance Certification to achieve access to new Export markets.

• The problem was that the current certification was not accepted by the International Retailers in the markets they wished to access.

3. Goals

• Design, write and train out the new system for each grower in the group to an acceptable Global standard. 

• Arrange site visit to each farm to Internally audit each farm in preparation for their 3rd party audit within 3 months.

4. Approach

• Identified the needs of each grower and the group as a whole to determine the best way forward.

• Wrote a system that retrospectively used the majority of their current data capture methods to minimise the impact of change to the management and employees.

• Internally audited each site to ensure the system was implemented and the physical aspects of the site were in line with the Certification expectations.

5. Results

• 100% of growers achieved certification within the 3 month period in readiness for the upcoming season.

•  Expanded Export markets were opened up and produce was sold to International Retailers that had not been previously accessed.

• This positively impacted grower returns as the new markets had a higher sale price point.

• This impacted local margins in a positive way as price was not driven lower locally due to volume of fruit on the market.
